More Demos crazy

I recently had a long chat with a collegue about democracy. He was very concerned about the way that righteous truthfinders seem to bypass all laws of democracy because they are so right. And on my way from him I started to go through whatever evidence there might be.
And my friend being an educated careful man - he certainly has a case.
When we went through the collapse of 2008 we had been partying a great deal. We had also allowed corruption in politics and business. This was dealt with in the report by Althingi. I have actually been wondering if it some bizarre humour that this investigation is called SIC.
So conclusions were drawn. We need to go by the law, follow some ethics and fiind the culprits.
For some strange reasons Althingi split into the bad guys and the good guys. The good guys bascally being the Left Greens and the new Civic movement. Desperately trying to clean his act the president needed points to.
I shall not try to go through the bad bunch but... what about the good guys?

We have a democacy. Its representative. It means that we select people to govern. In a society like the Society for people with Parkinsons or Psoriasis or the Teachers union or the town council. We get someone to stand, we debate and deliberate and then we vote. Of course I go by the majority rule so if my guy or gal loses I stand by the winner. Worst things are when one union had a vote (VR), had seven people standing for chairman and less then 20% coming out for the vote...

Of course I can leave a club or a union but I cannot leave a society and still live there can I?

So democracy is the decision made by the majority and the more the merrier. That is the bigger the turnout, the better the debate, the better the decision. So it is obviously a very strange rule that a president can veto or deny a ruling made by althingi as altingi is voted by representation. It is even more strange when two thirds of althingi made that decision. And quite bizarre when the same president talks about the general public holding the legislative powers. (Montesquieu where are you?) So we vote for parliament where the MPs debate and deliberate on an issue and then one man can turn over their decision and hand it back to the people to vote on it? And this is not a vote on whether we trust Althingi?
Now I am not taking sides on Icesave but...

Another such issue is the question of who holds a seat in Althingi?
In the UK MPs are elected individually, as are senators in the USA. In Iceland we put forward a list of people standing for a party in a constituency. Say 10 seats available, each party gets representatives proportional to the vote (20% two seats and so on). So in Iceland we may be looking at popular individuals but se are voting for a political party. Therefore many of us see the seat belonging to a party. So if I leave the party I should leave the seat.
Well we are special (to be continued)
