I´ve got a ticket for the Eagles!
So has my wife and a couple of great friends!
I got them as a gift from my favourite daughter...
I've always had a soft spot for them. Lots of guitars, really cool music, my kinda band.
A bit to country for my liking though so I suppose thats why I never put them alongside my big favourites. They really were a superband from the start, great session musicians that supported Linda Ronstad. Glenn Frey and Don Henley became the bands main writing team and man were they good!
I had a few of their albums and my favourite was On the border which is one of these albums that hardly have a weakness throughout. I mean. Already Gone, You Never Cry Like a Lover, Midnight Flyer, My Man, On the Border, James Dean, Ol' 55, Is It True?, Good Day in Hell, ... Any band would have killed for any one of these songs and to demonstrate the strength of the album they put Best of My Love as the last song!!!
They also had to have some humour as they put three versions of Doolin Dalton on the second album (Desperato 1973).
They did run out of steam in the late seventies and broke up for 14 years and made individual careers for that time. I followed Don Henley who made a lot of good music and I thought the Eagles would simply live through their songs.
This was partly due to Henleys comment that Eagles would get back together when Hell freezes over.
So Hell did and they did in 1994 and from then on they reunited every now and then. They even did a farewell tour (like the Shadows, Cher, Dylan, ) as well as issuing compilations until 2007 when they released Long road out of Eden the first studio album for nigh on 28 years. They did 6 studio albums from 1972 to 1979 plus one in 2007. But they´ve got nine compilations (one being four discs and a few two) so from the seven albums you have at least twice the number of discs compiling songs. Talk about squeezing.
And now they are coming to Iceland. June 9th. And no doubt they will play their best of and play it more or less the way we heard them for decades and it will take a lot to disappoint me.
And by the way...
The title of this blog is not to offend. Its a fact.
How's
"A runaway team of horses,
Ain't enough to make me stay"
or
"When we're hungry... love will keep us alive"
or
"And I found out a long time ago /
what a woman can do to your soul /
All that she can take you anyway /
You don't already know how to go"
Who cares - the music is too cool. (first quote - Midnight flyer; second - Love will keep us alive; third - Peaceful easy feeling (which makes no sense at all)).
The immense strength of the Eagles is the Frey/Henley partnership. Its like some such partnerships, totally remarkable and leaves behind a chain of music. To name but three - The Last resort from 1976, a true masterpiece; Desperado from their second album in 1973 and obviously Hotel California no doubt the most famous of them all. The Last Resort and Hotel California are from the same album, their last really good one. The Hotel song is a bit like Stairway to heaven - long intro and grand finale.
So lets just relax and look forward to June 9th. Whatever else - the music will be great, the company too, life is good.
