Who's presidency?

One of the strangest players in Icelandic politics is our president. He is a man of standing and authority. He has been a noted man from the 1960's when he entered Icelandic politics, the university and media. My first memory of him is of a TV commentator, him, who grilled an official on TV to an extent that it shocked the nation. Later he split the progressive party, at a point where it wasn't all that progressive and later he joined two other parties before "leaving" politics and going for the presidency in 1996. He very sadly lost his wife from cancer but later married a British diamond tradesman and has been happily married to her.
I´ve seen this guy in action and he is incredible. It does not matter if its children or international school leaders. He has them eating from the palms of his hands in minutes. No written speaches.
Why do I not want him to hang in there?
For one thing he has this knack of dancing with the stars at any given time. When he became president in 1996 he appeared to be one wanting to join the people. When the boom began after the turn of the century he very much became an advocate of the crashpreneurs. He regularly  used their private jets and at least once went to China with his wife to open stores owned by the Baugur group. Or rather leased to the Baugur group. So when he became the peoples hero after the crash, well, I do not know. It rather fell through with me.

The big surprise was the declaraton I heard the other day. It ran something like this: The Icelandic people do not trust the legislature. Only 10% trust its judgement.
So they put their trust on the president.

How badly off must you be, the person asked.

I do not know. I trust democracy.
